The Russian Art of War: How the West Led Ukraine to Defeat

Image
Why is Ukraine losing the war against Russia? How do both sides think and operate? What were the mistakes on both sides? How did the West contribute to the Ukrainian defeat?
To answer these and many other questions, Jacques Baud draws on official information as well as American, Western and Russian documents. He explains how Russia understands and conducts the war. He shows how the West’s inability to grasp this reality and its determination to weaken Russia has backfired in Ukraine. Following on from the bestsellers Putin: Game master?, Operation Z and Ukraine Between War and Peace, whose analytical work has been acclaimed worldwide and translated into several languages, the author returns to the war in Ukraine. He explains how Russia waged the war, and reveals how the image portrayed by the West led to Ukraine’s failure.

Jacques Baud was a member of Swiss strategic intelligence, a specialist in Eastern Europe and former head of doctrine for UN peacekeeping operations. D...

Alexander the Great Avenger: The Campaign that Felled Achaemenid Persia

Image
Since 500 BC the mainland Greeks had been threatened by the Achaemenid Persian Empire. They had suffered major invasions but subsequent attempts to take the offensive had been thwarted. With Alexander the Great’s invasion the rules changed. In Macedonia a new model army had been developed, taking the traditional hoplite heavy infantry in a new evolutionary direction and similarly transforming the heavy cavalry. These developments neutralized the Persians’ own efforts to modernize their troops, tactics and equipment. Manousos Kambouris’ detailed analysis explains that it was Alexander’s intelligent use of these forces, that allowed him to dictate the course of the campaign. His excellent strategic and operational decision-making, based on an intimate knowledge of geography and logistics, along with well-timed movements and clever feints...

Carthage's Other Wars: Carthaginian Warfare Outside the 'Punic Wars' Against Rome

Image
Carthage was the western Mediterranean's first superpower, long before Rome, and her military history was powerful, eventful, and chequered even before her 'Punic Wars' against Rome. Although characterized in the surviving sources and modern studies as a predominantly mercantile state, Carthage fought many wars, both aggressive and defensive, before and in between the contests with the Roman parvenus. The Greek states of Sicily, above all Syracuse under its tyrants Dionysius the Great and then Agathocles, were her most resolute opponents, but in North Africa itself, in Sardinia, and later on in Spain she won--and sometimes lost--major wars. This is the first full-length study dedicated to these other wars which furthered Carthage's interests for over half a millennium. The book is based firmly and analytically on the ancient sources, and among many insights is that Carthage, though usually considered a naval power, did more fighting on land than at sea and with more s...
